Rebecca Stewart

Rebecca Stewart is a full time High School art teacher based in Christchurch with a BFA (Hons) from Ilam and a Diploma in Secondary Teaching. Her works have been exhibited throughout New Zealand. These solid polyester resin skulls are part of a body of work drawing from the traditions of still life and vanitas – the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. The skulls are symbolic harbingers of death typical of these 17th century paintings but fashioned with an inherently feminine aesthetic, having delicate detail, exquisite beauty and a high gloss that evokes a desire to touch and yet at odds with the vanitas message.
